Zambia Safari Overview

Zambia is one of Africa's most authentic safari destinations, known for outstanding guiding, remote wilderness, rich wildlife and some of the continent's best walking safaris. It offers a wilder and less crowded safari experience than many better-known destinations, making it ideal for travellers who want deep immersion in nature.

South Luangwa National Park is Zambia's most famous safari region and is often regarded as the home of the walking safari. Its woodlands, lagoons and river systems support elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, giraffes and large concentrations of antelope. The quality of guiding is exceptional, and both walking safaris and night drives are major highlights.

Lower Zambezi National Park offers a different kind of experience along the Zambezi River. Visitors can combine game drives with canoe safaris, boat trips, fishing and river-based wildlife viewing. Kafue National Park, one of Africa's largest parks, adds vast wilderness, predators, antelope diversity and remote safari camps.

Zambia also shares access to Victoria Falls, one of Africa's most spectacular natural landmarks. SafariCalc connects travellers with experienced Zambia safari operators offering walking safaris, luxury lodges, mobile camps, river adventures and tailor-made itineraries.

Best Time to Visit

Zambia's main safari season runs from May to October, during the dry season. Wildlife viewing improves as water becomes scarce and animals gather near rivers, lagoons and permanent water sources.

June to August offers cooler conditions, clear skies and excellent walking safari weather. September and October are hotter, but wildlife viewing can be exceptional, especially in South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi.

The green season from November to April brings lush landscapes, migratory birds and dramatic scenery, although some camps close because roads can become difficult. Victoria Falls is especially impressive when water levels are high, usually after the rainy season.

The best time depends on whether travellers prioritise walking safaris, predator sightings, birdwatching, Victoria Falls or river activities.

Wildlife

Zambia offers exceptional wildlife across several major ecosystems. South Luangwa is famous for leopards, lions, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, wild dogs and endemic Thornicroft's giraffes. Night drives often reveal nocturnal wildlife and predator activity.

Lower Zambezi provides outstanding river-based wildlife viewing, with elephants, hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, antelope, lions, leopards and rich birdlife along the Zambezi River. Canoe safaris offer a quiet and memorable way to experience the landscape.

Kafue National Park supports cheetahs, wild dogs, lions, leopards, elephants, roan antelope, sable antelope and many other species. Zambia is also excellent for birdwatching, especially during the green season.

Safari Styles

Zambia is best known for walking safaris, but it also offers luxury lodge safaris, mobile safaris, photographic safaris, canoe safaris, boat safaris and remote wilderness experiences.

South Luangwa is ideal for walking and night drives, while Lower Zambezi is perfect for travellers who want to combine wildlife with river activities. Kafue suits experienced safari travellers looking for space, variety and fewer visitors.

Zambia is excellent for travellers who value guiding quality, authenticity and wilderness over busy safari circuits. It also combines well with Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and South Africa.

Travel Tips

Most visitors access Zambia through Lusaka, Livingstone or regional flights connecting safari areas. Many camps are remote, so light aircraft transfers are common on higher-end itineraries.

Pack neutral-coloured clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, binoculars, insect repellent and a warm layer for cool mornings. Walking safaris require practical footwear and willingness to follow guide instructions carefully.

Some camps operate seasonally, especially in remote areas, so travel dates should be planned around camp openings and road access. Always confirm current visa requirements, park fees, health advice and Victoria Falls water conditions before departure.
