Overview
This 5-day Ndutu Migration safari offers an unforgettable journey through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the southern Serengeti plains during the spectacular Great Migration calving season. The safari focuses on the Ndutu region, where vast herds of wildebeest and zebras gather between January and March to give birth on the nutrient-rich grasslands. The high concentration of wildlife attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards, creating exceptional opportunities for game viewing and photography. The itinerary combines two of Tanzania’s most remarkable wildlife destinations: the Ndutu plains and the Ngorongoro Crater. Guests will experience full-day game drives across open savannahs, woodland areas, and seasonal lakes while witnessing dramatic wildlife interactions and breathtaking landscapes. The safari concludes with a game drive inside the Ngorongoro Crater, home to an incredible diversity of animals including the endangered black rhino. Designed for travelers seeking a short but rewarding safari experience, this itinerary provides excellent chances to witness the Great Migration, predator action, and the natural beauty of northern Tanzania within only five days.

Safari Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide. After a short meet and greet, you will be transferred to your hotel in Arusha. This first day is reserved for relaxation after your international journey, allowing you to recover and settle in comfortably. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to explore Arusha city briefly or simply enjoy a peaceful evening at your hotel as you prepare for the safari adventure ahead.
Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Arusha, heading west toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The drive takes you through changing landscapes that include local villages, coffee farms, and the beautiful highlands surrounding Ngorongoro. Along the way, there is usually a stop at the Ngorongoro Crater viewpoint, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera before continuing toward the southern Serengeti plains. By midday, you arrive in the Ndutu Region, one of the most important areas of the Great Migration during the calving season. After lunch, you begin your first game drive across the open plains and woodland areas surrounding Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek. During this period, thousands of wildebeest and zebras gather here to graze on the nutrient-rich grasses, and it is common to witness newborn calves among the herds. The concentration of prey also attracts predators, giving excellent opportunities to spot lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and sometimes leopards. As the sun sets over the plains, you return to camp or lodge for dinner and overnight while listening to the sounds of the African wilderness. The following day is dedicated to a full-day game drive in the Ndutu area. With its vast open plains, seasonal lakes, and scattered acacia woodlands, Ndutu offers exceptional wildlife viewing throughout the day. You will have ample time to follow the migration herds, observe predator activity, and explore different habitats within the region. Depending on wildlife movements, you may witness dramatic hunting scenes, large concentrations of wildebeest and zebras, and a variety of resident wildlife including giraffes, elephants, gazelles, and numerous bird species. A picnic lunch is typically enjoyed in the bush, allowing you to maximize your time in the field before returning to camp or lodge in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight. On Day 4, after an early breakfast, you will depart Ndutu and return to the Ngorongoro Crater, where you will descend 600 meters to the crater floor for an unforgettable game drive. This UNESCO-listed natural wonder is renowned for its high concentration of wildlife, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, zebras, wildebeests, and the rare black rhino. After a picnic lunch on the crater floor and further wildlife viewing, you will ascend the crater walls and continue to Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast at the lodge in Karatu, you will check out and begin your drive back to Arusha. The journey takes you through the scenic highlands of the Ngorongoro area, passing coffee plantations, rural villages, and beautiful landscapes along the way. Upon arrival in Arusha, you may have lunch or a short stop depending on your flight schedule. If this marks the end of your safari adventure, you will be transferred to either Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport for your onward departure flight. For guests extending their holiday to Zanzibar, you will be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Zanzibar, where you can continue your journey with a relaxing beach stay on the island. This concludes your unforgettable safari experience in Tanzania.
